Clockwork Angel

-Cassandra Clare

Cassandra Clare’s controversial Mortal Instrument Series, was, undoubtably, aimed at older readers. I would not suggest it to the young Twilight generation, but then again,  I have a hard time imagining myself recommending Twilight to the young Twilight generation. This series appears to be much more tame (in some ways) but just as incredibly well written. The Infernal Devices takes place in the same world as The Mortal Instruments. This is a world in which Demons, Downworlders, and Humans (aka Mundanes) live side by side, though not necessarily in harmony. The Demons for instance are always on the verge of destroying the world, only stopped by the super-mega-foxy-awesome-hot Shadowhunters. (My apologies if you do not get that reference).  Seriously.

Will and Jace (Will being from ID and Jace from MI) are both supposed to beautiful but dark. They are always are put side-by-side with the nice guy you know the main girl should end up with, though, at the same time you know she won’t. What I applaud in Clare is that she does not try to solve this problem by killing the nice guy. It’s refreshing. So Will in the books is a bit of a jerk. But better than Patch. Wow, I hated Fallen….

ANYWAY! Clare has an incredible talent for action writing, perhaps topping the fantastical workings of Suzanne Collins (The Hunger Games). In this wildly original world of Clare’s we go back to a London with horse drawn carriages, dresses, scandals and the birth of the industrial revolution. Yes, I deem thee Steampunk! The Shadowhunters are just as at odds with the downworlders as ever, and the tension seems to have spawned several anti-Nephilim conspiracies. Tess comes to London in search of her brother, but ends up being kidnapped and tortured by the aptly named Dark Sisters. She is saved by Shadowhunters Will and Jem, who were investigating the death of  Mundane they recently discovered. Soon it becomes apparent that Tess’ power is not normal, and is therefore valued. She agrees to stay with Shadowhunters if they help her find her brother, Nate. And with this pact, some kind of history is made, and they all set out to hunt some demon spawn. Steampunk style.

As I mentioned earlier, this book probably ranks with The Maze Runner on my list of best examples of YA action writing. Stunning. Even if you disliked the first series, I strongly recommend you try this one.

Trailer is below, although I cannot guarantee the awesomeness of it. As I have said before, book trailers are notoriously cheesy.
